About Josh

I have been a professional teacher and education researcher for seven years, on the topics of math, physics, and computer programming.  I taught college students how to teach other college students, and managed a team of about eight student teachers for many years.  I volunteered at FLOC (For Love of Children) in Washington, D.C., where I tutored elementary school level math.  I have also taught math to my own children, both in home schooling and as a supplement to their public school education.  I have a PhD in physics from the University of California, Berkeley and a bachelor's degree in physics and math from Harvard.  I graduated from Harvard with magna cum laude and phi beta kappa.

Tutoring for Young Learners

I volunteered at FLOC (For Love of Children) in Washington, D.C., where I tutored elementary school level math. I have also taught math to my own children, both in home schooling and as a supplement to their public school education. I really enjoyed "fun" math books as a child, including authors such as Martin Gardener, the Brown Paper School (e.g. The I Hate Mathematics Book), and Raymond Smullyan. I enjoy motivating math students by spending a little time on fun math topics like fractals (now a featured word in the Frozen song "Let It Go"), probability games (which come up in the kids' TV series The Hollow), infinity, and paradoxes.

Tutoring for High School and College Learners

I taught college-level physics for seven years, including algebra-based introductory physics, which is comparable to a high school physics course.  My field of study was physics education research, meaning that I investigated how to teach physics better.  For example, I wrote peer-reviewed articles about how students can learn calculus together with physics.  I also studied and wrote about physics labs.  In addition to helping many college students with algebra as well as calculus-level physics, I have been engaged in SAT tutoring as well, and have taught computer programming in Python.

Topics Taught

Math: I am happy to teach any level of math.  In college, I took math courses beyond calculus, linear algebra, and multivariable calculus.  At the same time, I have helped my own children with kindergarten and elementary school level math, and I've found that I enjoy all levels of math teaching.

Physics: I am comfortable teaching any level of physics.  I taught physics at the simplest level (algebra-based physics) for many years.  At the same time, I have a physics PhD, so I can also teach more advanced college level physics.

Computer programming: I can teach computer programming in the Python language.

My Approach

Flexibility: Each learner has their own needs, personality, interests, and preferences.

Freedom: Part of giving help involves providing advice and coaching about resources you can use on your own.

Communication: I want to know about your goals, values, and feelings about learning.
